Concrete Shore

2023

This sculpture is a data physicalization reflecting the brutal environmental transformation of Lake Balaton.

Increasing tourism has led to the gradual concretization of the shoreline of Lake Balaton, often accompanied by the removal or neglect of reed beds that play a crucial ecological role in the lake. While built infrastructure continues to expand, the quality and condition of the reeds have significantly deteriorated —contributing to the worsening water quality of the lake and raising the possibility that within the next decade swimming there may no longer be possible.

The work consists of an angled concrete base representing the growth of concrete along the shoreline. Embedded reed fragments visualize ecological research from the past twenty years: the quantity of healthy reed has rapidly decreased, while degraded reed has increased.
